Whimsical form and movements.

Shop display at twentytwentyone, February 2022

In collaboration with twentytwentyone, we produced a collection of mobiles sculpture with whimsical form and movements.

This mobile sculpture is made with offcuts from our wood workshop in Southeast London. We play with and assemble shapes which we find directly from the offcuts box, or we cut-out shapes from materials that are too small to use otherwise.

Offcuts are European oak, European ash, American cherry and English cherry, Beech (unknown sources, supplied by client on a commission project) and London Plane from London. They are offcuts from our various projects making chairs, tables, stools, exhibition display units etc. The step looking pieces are trimming of soap dish, another offcuts item we make at our studio.
Made more as a play and a fun exercise of assembling shapes – rather than designing objects, we often worked directly with the materials without thinking too much of the end item. Due to the offcuts as material, the shapes were often already there, and it was more like a puzzle of what can be combined and look interesting. However, to make it work as a mobile needed a little more considerations in the end and sometime we had to make alterations to the parts. Other time, we just draw some shapes directly on the material free hand and cut out.
